Boeing and Japan Airlines Finalize Order for 17 Additional 737 Max 8 Aircraft

Boeing, the US aircraft manufacturer, and Japan Airlines (JAL), a member of the oneworld alliance, have finalized an order for 17 additional 737 Max 8 aircraft. The new jets will be deployed primarily on JAL’s domestic routes, as the airline seeks to capitalize on record-breaking tourism numbers in Japan.

This marks JAL’s second order for the 737 Max 8, nearly doubling its total 737 Max backlog to 38 firm orders. Mitsuko Tottori, president of Japan Airlines, expressed pride in continuing the legacy of the 737, which has served as the backbone of the airline’s single-aisle fleet for nearly five decades. “We are honored to continue its legacy as part of our future fleet,” said Tottori. “We are excited to add more 737-8s to deliver a safe and secure journey to our valued customers with a sophisticated flying experience.”

The 737 Max 8 is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, offering a 15% improvement in efficiency compared to the 737-800s it will replace. JAL highlighted the commonality across the 737 family, which will allow for smooth integration of the new aircraft into the existing fleet.

In addition to its efficiency gains, the 737 Max 8 will introduce Boeing’s Sky Interior, designed to enhance the passenger experience with advanced LED lighting, larger windows, and spacious overhead bins.

JAL has long been a Boeing customer, with a fleet that includes 767s, 777s, and 737-800s. The airline was also one of the first to operate the 787 Dreamliner. Currently, JAL operates a mix of over 50 787-8s and 787-9s and has recently placed an order for 10 additional 787-9s to support growing international travel demand.

Meanwhile, JAL’s subsidiary, ZIPAIR Tokyo, is expanding its international network by integrating 10 787-9s previously operated by JAL into its fleet.

In addition to its Boeing fleet, JAL made a significant move last year by signing a top-up purchase agreement with Airbus for 20 additional A350-900 aircraft and 11 A321neo aircraft, further diversifying its aircraft portfolio to meet growing demand.
