Beginning January 2026, American Airlines will provide free Wi-Fi on 90% of its aircraft, marking a major shift in the airline’s inflight connectivity offerings. This move makes American Airlines the latest major U.S. carrier to introduce free Wi-Fi, following similar steps taken by competitors, although the service will only be available to members of the airline’s AAdvantage loyalty program.
Previously, passengers aboard American Airlines flights had to pay for Wi-Fi, with fees ranging from $10 per flight to $599 for an annual pass. However, after successful testing of free internet service on select routes, the airline announced that it exceeded performance expectations. As a result, the service will be rolled out across nine out of ten American Airlines aircraft starting in 2026.
American Airlines has partnered with telecommunications giant AT&T to upgrade its fleet with Viasat and Intelsat high-speed satellite connectivity. This collaboration aims to provide passengers with reliable and fast Wi-Fi, enabling them to stay connected during their flights.
Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, emphasized the value customers place on staying connected while traveling. “Our customers greatly value staying connected while in the air, whether communicating with friends, getting work done, checking in on social media, or streaming their favorite subscription services. We’ve been working diligently to outfit our aircraft with best-in-class high-speed Wi-Fi, and together with AT&T, we’re proud to offer these services at no cost to our most loyal customers,” she said. “This was a natural partnership in every aspect: two iconic Texas-based brands, known for innovation and connection.”
By the end of 2025, American Airlines will equip 500 regional aircraft with high-speed Wi-Fi in preparation for the launch of the new service. The airline plans to offer free Wi-Fi on more than two million flights annually, making it the U.S. carrier with the largest fleet offering complimentary inflight connectivity.
Jenifer Robertson, EVP & GM of Mass Markets at AT&T, highlighted the importance of connectivity for modern travelers. “People want to be connected. Everywhere. All the time. Whether it’s staying in touch with those who matter most, following a favorite sports team, or catching up on that show everyone is talking about, connectivity brings people a world of possibilities. We are proud to partner with American Airlines to connect people to what matters most to them — even in the sky.”
American Airlines joins a growing list of U.S. carriers offering free Wi-Fi to passengers. JetBlue was the first to introduce the service in 2013, followed by Delta Air Lines in 2023. United Airlines also announced plans to roll out free Wi-Fi in partnership with Starlink, with full implementation expected by the end of 2025.
